Having a modem of home improvement sense makes perfect sense. Tim Allen in the popular TV series Home Improvement was constantly showing us what not to do. Taking his example is probably a good idea.

Following some simple and basic guidelines at all times can help assure that you will be safe and the quality of your work will be par with the professionals. From safety to technique, knowing what you are getting into ahead of time will save you a lot of hassle. Here are a few very simple and general guidelines to follow. Most of them you probably already know, but a reminder doesn’t hurt does it?

Safety is the first thing to think about in home improvement. Eye protection really should be worn at all times. Being strict about it will save a lot of future issues. Even when sanding or painting wear your protective eyewear. One small mishap can result in a looking like a pirate or wearing coke bottle glasses on your face for life.

In addition to eye protection make sure you wear the proper attire. Loose fitting clothing and power tools don’t mix. Speaking of mixing, even when dealing with “organic” types of paint or everyday household cleaners, make sure to wear gloves. Even the biodegradable stuff can still irritate skin.

Gluing is one of the most abused home improvement jobs in my opinion. Often the surfaces to be glued are never prepped correctly and hardly ever left to dry as they should be. Follow the directions on the bottle or in the box for the best results. The worst results would be the chair you glued falling apart with Aunt Ruby still in it.

Painting is a very important part of home improvement. You must prep the surface to be painted properly. Failing to do so will result in further loss of time next year when you have to repaint the surface again and result in that much more paint to be scraped off later. You might as well do it right the first time. Also another by-product of not doing it right is the question “Are you SURE you know what you are doing?”

Planning is a big part of home improvement. When planning and scheduling your jobs try to make sure that you schedule the “money jobs” in first. By this I mean the jobs that will save you money in the long term. Insulating, replacing or repairing heating systems and plumbing will only save you money. This is nice because in the long term these savings can be applied towards the “prettier” projects you want to do.

Whatever you decide to do as part of your home improvement regime, the rule of Keep It Simple Stupid applies. Safety, planning and proper implementation will save you headache and help improve your home from day one.

Safety Tips When Cleaning Your Gutters Yourself

Part of maintaining the exterior of your home means keeping your gutters clean. A lot of homeowners attempt to do this job themselves to save some money. If you do there are a few safety tips you should abide by.

1. Make certain that you use a sturdy ladder. Always set the ladder on level ground. If standing the ladder in a flower bed, be sure all straw or mulch is moved out of the way to allow the ladder is set firmly on the ground.

2. While using an extension ladder that is leaned on the gutters, try cutting a small 2×4 board that you can sit inside the gutter. By doing this, you will provide a solid location that you can safely set the ladder against without running the risk of severely damaging the gutter.

3. When you are on a ladder, never lean out to the left or the right of the ladder. Always keep your hips square with the ladder to maintain your balance.

4. Never stand on the top two rungs of a ladder. This is a vulnerable part of the ladder and provides little leverage if you were to lose your balance.

5. If you decide to clean the gutters from the roof, use a safety harness for protection from falling. Never try to lean out over the gutters.

6. Don’t attempt to work on a roof during wet, icy, or windy conditions.

7. You should wear shoes with non-slip soles like sneakers or work boots while working on a ladder or working from the roof.

8. Always wear heavy duty work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal corners and screws sticking through metal surfaces.

9. Safety glasses are a good way to keep trash and roof granules from getting in your eyes while cleaning the gutters. This will help protect your eyes from getting scratched or irritated.

10. Always stay clear of electrical lines.

While cleaning your gutters is a good way to maintain the exterior of your home and it’s foundation, by following these safety tips you can do it carefully.

Concrete Is Not Your Only Choice For A Patio

If you are thinking of what material to use to build your new patio, there are many different options that might be considered. You don’t have to have the usual cookie cutter concrete patio that so many new houses are built with today.

Natural stone patios are fairly rare due to the cost and difficulty required to put them together correctly. A stone patio, though hard work to build because of the weight of material, is a long lasting home improvement that promises to add resale value to your home once it is complete. There is a near endless array of natural stone varieties to choose from and a special masonry supplier will have the most available options.

If stone is not to your liking then brick provides a nice alternative. Brick can be laid in a virtually endless number of patterns and designs and patios of this kind can be created in any size. Brick is relatively easy to lay and lends a substantial look to the property. Laying brick is less difficult than stone and many people know individuals who know how to do this so you might be able to spare yourself the expense of hiring a professional. Brick is available at many retail outlets and stores so supplies are easy to find. Bricks make lovely houses and they also build attractive patios.

Flagstone comes in many different colors so it is a durable material that you can use to explore your creativity. Flagstone is much more attractive than a traditional concrete slabs that come with many houses and will raise the resale value of your home. A patio made of flagstone is especially complimentary to a garden environment and makes a wonderful out door space that you will love to entertain in.

If you do choose concrete for your patio, you can still make the concrete look unique by stamping it. There are so many plain concrete patios that look alike and it is understandable if you want to make yours look better. Stamping your patio will give it some texture and make it look different than the normal concrete. Then, if you want to take it a step further, you can use a dye to color your patio an appropriate color. The combination of stamping and coloring your concrete patio will make it look great and will fool many of your guests into thinking your patio is made of something other than concrete.

The tempreture in the room is largely dependent on which direction the room is facing since southern facing rooms do get a lot more direct sunlight which obviously means that they build up a lot more heat than northern facing rooms. You will probably need to install an air conditioning unit. These range greatly in price but a simple ‘through the wall’ unit can cost as little as ?500. Apart from some intricities, they are relatively easy to install and don’t cost as much as their split unit cousins. Having said that they do make a bit more noise and are not as effective but then you get what you pay for. Many also have an heating option so that you are covered all year round.

Sound Proofing

You will need to take the noise level into account. Equipment such as electric steps and treadmills make quite a lot of noise and you will need to take your neighbours and the other occupants in the house into consideration. Making Sure Of Your Building Materials

As spring quickly approaches, my thoughts turn briefly to another year full of DIY projects and home alteration ambitions – much to my wife’s’ terror. I love the idea of completely changing a room or building an additional add-on to my house – my wife likes the idea of living in a dirt-free house without the ongoing noises of power tools and hammering.

My wife and I have compromised. I will visit her parents for two whole weeks (a project in itself) and, as a reward for this, I get to destroy our home and build it back up into a dream palace. Sounds simple but in truth both of us actually have to sit down and agree as to what it is we want doing and to make sure that I do it correctly, we both decide on the kinds of building materials that are needed for the job.

Building Materials can easily make or break your D-I-Y project. If you don’t use the correct building material then the chances are very good that the end result will not be what you originally intended it to be. That said, you also don’t need to spend an arm or a leg getting hold of building supplies as long as know how to work with them and accept the limitations of your skills. If you buy very expensive kitchen tiles, for example, but you don’t have a clue how to install them properly, the cost of the materials might as well have been thrown down the toilet since the end result will look terrible.

You have to start with a clear goal or vision as to what you want the finished result to look like and then select the type and quality of building materials that you are going to need to make that vision real. Not all ‘Do It Yourself’ projects are the same. Some will only require alterations or ‘quick fixes’ while others might be more intricate.
