Study the layout marks on the wall plates to determine the location of any doors, windows, corners, and wall intersections. If you have any questions, now is the time to ask the wife, before framing walls not after.
Before you start constructing your wall a little layout is required. Using a caulk line and a measuring tape indicate on the floor where the walls will go. There is no need to mark both sides of the wall, but place a “x” on the side of the line where the wall will go.
Light frame construction using standardized dimensional lumber has become the dominant construction method in North America and Australia because of its economy. Use of minimal structural materials allows builders to enclose a large area with minimal cost, while achieving a wide variety of architectural styles.
Interior partitions supporting floor, ceiling or roof loads are called loadbearing walls; others are called non-loadbearing or simply partitions. Interior loadbearing walls are framed in the same way as exterior walls. Studs are usually 2 4 in lumber spaced at 16 in on centre. This spacing may be changed to 12 in or 24 in depending on the loads supported and the type and thickness of the wall finish used.
Structural headers are often oversized or installed where unnecessary, largely for convenience. Proper sizing of headers allows better insulation and saves wood. In some cases, single-ply (single 2×6, for example) headers can be used, allowing even better insulation around windows. Headers are not required in non-bearing walls, including most interior walls and gable endwalls with only non-bearing trusses directly above.
Headers are those horizontal members that run across the top of doors, windows, entryways, etc. Headers are important because they support weight that ordinarily would have been supported by vertical studs in that space. Squaring walls before standing them is a rather simple process. Whenever possible, exterior walls should be squared up, sheathed, and house wrap applied before being raised. Any carpenter is more efficient standing flat footed on the ground, therefore all work that can be completed on the ground should be.
Prior to removing any walls to assemble your new wall you must be careful in case live electrical wires or plumbing run thorough the wall. Non load bearing walls are sometimes called partition walls. Over time, previous homeowners may have mistakenly added features to the house which use the partition walls for support. Check before you remove any walls to prevent costly mistakes.
